Kakamega Forest is Kenya's only tropical rainforest: the easternmost remnant of the great Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once stretched across Central Africa. Here you'll find wildlife and birds seen nowhere else in the country, towering indigenous trees draped in vines, and a stillness broken only by birdsong and the crash of monkeys in the canopy.

How far is Kakamega Forest from Kisumu?
Kakamega Forest is roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive north of Kisumu. Return transport is included: pickup at United Mall, Kisumu (in front of KFC) at 6:30 AM, back by about 4:30 PM.
Which trail should I choose, short or long?
The Short Walk (~5 km, ~2 hours) is ideal for families, students and first-time hikers. The Long Walk (~15 km, 4–5 hours, moderate inclines) is built for avid hikers and serious birders who want to go deeper into the forest.
What birds can I see in Kakamega Forest?
Over 300 species have been recorded, including the Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Ross's Turaco and the rare Turner's Eremomela. Early morning is best, which is why we start at 6:30 AM.
When is the best time to visit?
Rain is possible any month (it's a rainforest!). The drier months, roughly December–February and June–August, give firmer trails, while the rainy months bring the lushest greenery and peak butterfly activity. Always pack rain gear.
