Maasai Mara Visitor Rules, Fees, Tipping & Packing Tips (2026)

The 12-Hour Rule & Park Hours

Masai Mara entry tickets are valid for a single 12-hour window, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, regardless of what time you enter. This replaced the old 24-hour ticket system. The park effectively closes to new game drives at 6:00 PM. Night safaris are not permitted inside the main reserve, though some private conservancies bordering the Mara do offer guided night drives under separate rules. Guests staying overnight inside the reserve don't pay extra for the night itself, but must exit by 10:00 AM the next day or be charged for an additional full day.

Safari Rules to Know

  • Stay inside your vehicle during game drives; never approach or feed wildlife
  • Vehicles must remain on designated tracks off-road driving is restricted
  • Keep noise levels down and avoid littering
  • All visitors must have park fees paid and verified before entry

2026 Entry Fees (Approximate)

Non-resident adult entry typically ranges from around $100 in low season up to $200 in peak season (July-December) per 12-hour period, plus roughly $80 for an overnight stay inside the reserve. Resident and East African citizen rates are considerably lower. Fees are reviewed periodically by Narok County, so always confirm current pricing with your operator before travel.

Affordable Group Safaris from Nairobi

Joining a shared group departure is usually the most budget-friendly way to do the Mara, since transport, park fees, and guide costs are split across the group rather than carried by one private vehicle. Ask us about current group departure dates from Nairobi.

Tipping Your Safari Driver-Guide

A common guideline is $10-$20 per person per day for your driver-guide, given at the end of the trip. Trackers or spotters are typically tipped $5-$10 per day, and a similar amount per day is appropriate for camp/lodge staff, often left in a shared tip box. Tipping is customary but discretionary cash in USD or Kenyan shillings is preferred.

What to Wear: The White & Red Question

White is best avoided on game drives because it shows dust almost immediately and stands out sharply in the bush. Bright colors like red, orange, and yellow can draw wildlife attention, while blue and black tend to attract biting tsetse flies. Neutral tones khaki, olive, beige, brown are the safest bet for game drives. Red itself isn't "banned": it's the traditional color of the Maasai shuka, so it's perfectly fine to wear at the lodge or during cultural visits it's mainly during active game drives that neutral colors are recommended.
