Where the Nile Begins

Jinja sits where Lake Victoria pours out into the River Nile and begins its 6,650km journey to the Mediterranean. It is one of the best places on the planet for white-water rafting, with big, warm rapids and professional safety crews, plus calmer stretches perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddling.

We balance the thrills with slow moments: a sunset boat ride to the Source of the Nile, a walk among the giant trees of Mabira Forest, and an afternoon in Jinja’s heritage town, markets and craft studios. No rafting experience needed, just a sense of adventure.

Know Before You Go

Travel Requirements

Jinja is an international trip. Please have these sorted before we leave Kisumu.

Passport or ID

Kenyan, Ugandan & Rwandan citizens can cross with a valid national ID (you get a free interstate pass at the border). Everyone else needs a passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.

Visa

East African citizens do not need a visa. Other nationalities apply online for a Uganda e-visa, or use the East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, multiple entry to Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda for 90 days). Apply at least 2 weeks before travel.

Yellow Fever

Vaccination is strongly recommended. Uganda announced in October 2026 that the certificate is no longer a condition of entry, but please carry your yellow card as airlines, other borders and onward countries may still ask for it.

Money

Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). Carry some cash for personal spending; we help you change money at the border. Mobile money (MTN / Airtel) works widely.

Phone & Data

Safaricom and Airtel roaming work in Uganda, or buy a local MTN / Airtel SIM with your ID or passport at the border.

Health & Insurance

Malaria prevention is advised (repellent, long sleeves, prophylaxis after speaking to your doctor). Personal travel/medical insurance is recommended.

Rafting safety: no experience needed, but you should be comfortable in water. Minimum age limits apply for big-water rafting (usually 14+). All rafting is run by licensed operators with helmets, life jackets and safety kayakers. Border crossing: we cross at Busia or Malaba. Allow 1–2 hours for immigration on both sides. Entry rules can change, so we confirm the latest requirements with every guest before departure.

  • National ID or passport (and visa if required) & yellow fever card
