Leave Kisumu in the morning and by evening you are watching the sun set over the Karamoja plains from the cliffs of Mt. Elgon. Three thundering waterfalls, Bugisu coffee farms and the warm Sabiny community await.
Sipi sits on the north-western slopes of Mt. Elgon, just across the border from Western Kenya. Here the Sipi River tumbles over the escarpment in three spectacular waterfalls, the tallest dropping close to 100 metres. You will hike between all three with a local Sabiny guide, cool off in the spray, learn how the famous Bugisu Arabica coffee is grown, picked and roasted by hand, and share meals and stories with the families who call this mountain home.
It is the perfect cross-border adventure for first-timers to Uganda: close to home, easy on the budget, and big on unforgettable views.

Early pick-up in Kisumu and drive west through Busia or Malaba into Uganda, then on via Mbale town as Mt. Elgon rises ahead. Climb the winding road to Sipi, check in to your lodge on the escarpment and catch the first view of the falls. Sunset over the Karamoja plains, then a warm welcome dinner.
After breakfast, hike with your Sabiny guide down to the base of the main falls and on to the second and third falls, passing farms, caves and village paths. After lunch, join a coffee farmer to pick, sun-dry, roast and brew Bugisu Arabica the traditional way. Evening stories around the fire with the community.
Optional sunrise walk to the viewpoint, breakfast, then a short visit to a local craft group before we drive back down the mountain and across the border, arriving in Kisumu in the evening.
Sipi is an international trip. Please have these sorted before we leave Kisumu.
Kenyan, Ugandan & Rwandan citizens can cross with a valid national ID (you get a free interstate pass at the border). Everyone else needs a passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.
East African citizens do not need a visa. Other nationalities apply online for a Uganda e-visa, or use the East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, multiple entry to Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda for 90 days). Apply at least 2 weeks before travel.
Vaccination is strongly recommended. Uganda announced in October 2026 that the certificate is no longer a condition of entry, but please carry your yellow card as airlines, other borders and onward countries may still ask for it.
Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). Carry some cash for personal spending; we help you change money at the border. Mobile money (MTN / Airtel) works widely.
Safaricom and Airtel roaming work in Uganda, or buy a local MTN / Airtel SIM with your ID or passport at the border.
Malaria prevention is advised (repellent, long sleeves, prophylaxis after speaking to your doctor). Personal travel/medical insurance is recommended.

Yes. Abseiling down the cliff beside the main Sipi waterfall (close to 100 metres) is one of the most popular activities. It is an optional extra on our trip and is run by trained local operators.
There are three main waterfalls on the Sipi River. Our guided hike with a local Sabiny guide visits all three, passing coffee farms and village paths along the way.
Sipi can be visited all year. The falls are fullest during and just after the rains (roughly March to May and September to November); the drier months are best for clear views and easier trails.
