Three days, two nights under the stars and one unforgettable summit. Hike from Uganda’s bamboo forests to the 4,321m roof of Mt. Elgon, one of the oldest and widest volcanoes on Earth.
Wagagai is the highest peak on Mt. Elgon, a massive extinct volcano straddling the Kenya–Uganda border with one of the largest calderas in the world. Starting from the Ugandan side, we follow the Sasa Trail from the foothills near Budadiri through farmland, thick bamboo forest and up to wide, wild heath and moorland dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels.
This is a fast, rewarding expedition for fit hikers who want a real high-altitude summit close to home, guided by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and our own trip leader, with porters and a camp cook taking care of the heavy lifting.

Very early departure from Kisumu, crossing into Uganda at Busia or Malaba and driving via Mbale to the Budadiri trailhead. After a park briefing with our ranger guides, we start up the Sasa Trail through farmland and into the bamboo forest, tackling the famous steep section the locals call the “wall”. Camp high on the mountain with dinner under the stars.
A pre-dawn start across open heath and moorland, past Mude Cave and up to the crater rim. Stand on Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mt. Elgon, with the vast caldera below you and views stretching across Uganda and Kenya. Celebrate, then descend back to camp for a hot dinner and a well-earned rest.
Breakfast in camp, then a long descent back through the moorland and bamboo to Budadiri. Certificates of completion, a farewell lunch, and the drive back across the border to Kisumu, arriving late evening.
Wagagai is an international trip into a Ugandan national park. Please have these sorted before we leave Kisumu.
Kenyan, Ugandan & Rwandan citizens can cross with a valid national ID (you get a free interstate pass at the border). Everyone else needs a passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.
East African citizens do not need a visa. Other nationalities apply online for a Uganda e-visa, or use the East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, multiple entry to Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda for 90 days). Apply at least 2 weeks before travel.
Vaccination is strongly recommended. Uganda announced in October 2026 that the certificate is no longer a condition of entry, but please carry your yellow card as airlines, other borders and onward countries may still ask for it.
Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). Carry some cash for personal spending; we help you change money at the border. Mobile money (MTN / Airtel) works widely.
Safaricom and Airtel roaming work in Uganda, or buy a local MTN / Airtel SIM with your ID or passport at the border.
Malaria prevention is advised (repellent, long sleeves, prophylaxis after speaking to your doctor). Personal travel/medical insurance is recommended.

Three waterfalls, Bugisu coffee farms and the warm Sabiny community on the slopes of Mt. Elgon.

White-water rafting on the Nile, paddling at sunrise, Mabira Forest and the adventure capital of East Africa.

Fly in from Nairobi for Lake Victoria beaches, shoebill storks, botanical gardens and slow island-time evenings.
Wagagai Peak is 4,321 metres above sea level, the highest point on Mt Elgon. It sits on the Ugandan side of the mountain, on the rim of one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world.
